This place is cool. A literal stones-throw from Inner Hope beach, The Cove is a unique, 100% independent and family run beach-style cafe where customers often leave as friends, returning time and time again. Located a few miles west of Salcombe and five miles southwest of Kingsbridge this unspolit seaside village boasts a striking coastline in either direction, met in the middle by this not-so-hidden gem.

The Cove drinks menu

Boasting over 50 local cask ales and ciders, we can see why this may be the best craft beer bar in the South West. With at least seven guest taps on draught - featuring staples such as Otter Amber, Tarka (Devon Craft Lager), Devon Red and Wildsider - there's certainly enough to quench your thirst as well as satisfy your intrigue. For a more mellow affair, satisfy those coffee cravings with a delicious locally-sourced cappuccino, unwind with a hot cuppa or take advantage of the large range of soft drinks on offer.

With their outdoor seating the cove thrives even more when the sunshine is out! Get your dose of vitamin D and enjoy a huge array of drinks! Wether it be Tea, Coffee, an ice cold G&T.

Craft beer – unusual, progressive beers made by small-scale breweries – is often explosively hoppy and quite unlike traditional beer. It accounts for just 7% of the UK's total beer sales, but it's hitting the mainstream in a big way and growing fast. Thanks to Vessel, Plymouth has it's very own Independent Beer Shop!

The concept at Vessel is simple; offer a vast selection of - and celebrate! - homegrown golden suds. They strive to challenge people’s preconceptions about what beer is and how it can taste by providing an interactive, personal, unique and comprehensive experience.

This bar-with-a-difference boasts over 100 continuously changing beers sourced from the finest, independent micro-breweries from all over the UK and across the world. They sell bottles, cans and draught beer for take away using growlers (reusable glass bottles), as well as a finely curated selection of Gins.

Taking residence on the up-and-coming Exeter Street, Vessel is located near the heart of the city; just a 10 minute walk from Drake Circus and a 20 minute walk from Plymouth Train Station.

Sam and Katie Congdon - the masterminds behind the shop - met in Leeds in 2010. Fed up with working for other people, they travelled the length of the UK - as well as Belgium, Germany and both coasts of the US - to explore the best breweries, bars and beer shops they could find.

They combined their love and knowledge of great beer with their enthusiasm for supporting small, independent businesses to set up Vessel in 2016, acting as craft beverage pioneers for the South West.

Definitely more bar than shop, Vessel Beer Shop is a friendly micropub – all utilitarian and rough-hewn wooden tables framed by 100s of cans and bottles, reading material and brightly-coloured bar snacks (Biltong, anyone?).

Its fridges contain a wealth of over 180 handpicked first-rate beers and, with man’s thirst for top-quality craft beer more insatiable than ever, it’s little surprise that Vessel is thriving. Each beer they offer has it own unique story to tell, made by passionate brewers from leading craft breweries across the globe. Similar to a library or an art gallery - a treasure trove - you could spend hours exploring what's on offer, revelling in the unique branding that encases each bottle and can.

The shop itself is understated yet inviting; modern yet homely. The small, thoughtful details - bursts of greenery, unique wall art, an impressive bottle display - make for a trendy, open environment more akin to a contemporary bar in London than a hidden gem in Plymouth.

The strong ethos that underpins Vessel is to provide consistently brilliant beer with top-quality, knowledgable and enthusiastic service. They have 6 different beers on tap varying in strength and flavour to suit all tastes. Vessel currently has a beer on tap from New Lion Brewery; a community craft brewery based in the fantastic, eclectic Devon town of Totnes.

Vessel stock the latest and greatest bottled beers, and are constantly adding to their range so you can always find something new. If you're bored with the industrially brewed lagers and same-old ales that currently dominate the UK beer market, Vessel is a must-visit vital hop hub.

P.s. Vessel have got MASSIVE plans coming this December so watch this space!
