The Horn Of Plenty

Updated: Aug 1, 2019

Experience outstanding views and distinctive luxury at The Horn of Plenty. Set in beautiful, secluded grounds, The Horn of Plenty is a luxurious boutique hotel and fine-dining restaurant with 16 unique rooms.

With postcard-perfect views, The Horn of Plenty is nestled on the border of Devon and Cornwall, overlooking the famous Tamar Valley towards Kit Hill and Bodmin moor. A stunning, independently owned 4-star Country House Hotel in Devon, The Horn of Plenty boasts a 2 AA Rosette Restaurant and 16 individually designed rooms.

The 'Horn of Plenty' is a symbol of abundance and nourishment.

Just 10 minutes from the historic market town of Tavistock and the wilderness of Dartmoor, The Horn of Plenty is only a short trip to many of the South West's historic National Trust houses and glorious gardens. Intimate and stylish, the house itself is framed with wisteria, magnificent against its idyllic backdrop.

The main house dates back to 1866. It was built for the Duke of Bedford’s Mine Captain, James Richards, who was responsible for the mining of copper and tin in the Tamar Valley. The house remained inextricably linked to mining throughout the boom years until 1918, when it became part of the Bedford Estate.

With numerous nature trails, art galleries and exhibits from local craftspeople, you will find plenty to occupy your time before returning for a glorious afternoon tea on the italianesque patio. Ramble across rolling hills or cosy up and enjoy a book in the library, or by the log fire in the drawing room.

Maintaining their local focus, the wonderful team at The Horn of Plenty are all locals themselves. Going above and beyond - from cake on arrival and your desired newspaper in the morning - the service at this boutique hotel mirrors the excellence of the mouth-watering food, style and scenery.

On a clear day you can still see the chimneys of several of the Cornish mines from the patio and restaurant.

In 1967, the house was converted into a restaurant, which is where their rich foodie history began – founder Sonia Stevenson was the first British woman to be awarded a Michelin star! Their carefully curated and acutely refined menu makes the most of local produce, offering a unique fine-dining experience full of flavour, vibrancy and variety.

In 1985, the restaurant became a hotel with 10 bedrooms. With a further update in June 2014, the Coach House was extended with 6 additional rooms, bringing the total room count to 16.

As a fairly new addition, the Coach House is modern with twists of character that perfectly compliment the original house and rustic location. Each room is light, airy and spacious; most with views overlooking the impressive surroundings.

From bathrobes to bottled water, the attention to detail is clear. Unwind with a luxurious bath or a drink in the dining room.

Relaxation and rejuvenation are at the heart of your stay here. Stroll through the garden, admire the stars, enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast alongside views of the valley and explore the surrounding countryside. Beautiful in all weathers and enduringly popular for Weddings and Christmas, The Horn of Plenty is perfect at any time of the year.

A home away from home, The Horn of Plenty shows that Devon isn’t just about the seaside; with the most stunning countryside to explore, 2 National Parks and 5 designated areas of outstanding natural beauty nearby.

The Horn of Plenty are totally dog friendly too. Dogs are welcome in designated bedrooms, and in the library. They’ll love the Horns 5 acres of gardens, and the 25km walks in the Tamar Valley below. They’ll also adore the complimentary “doggie dinner” on their first night too.

Doused in history yet forward-thinking in style and cuisine, The Horn of Plenty is the perfect getaway for those who appreciate unparalleled views, fresh and vibrant food and a refreshing focus on pioneering all things local.
